Admissions
In order to be considered for admission to our program the GRE general test is required. The TOEFL test is required if your previous degree is from an institution at which English is not the language of instruction. A minimum TOEFL score of 550 (213 computerized) is required for admission. We also require a minimum grade point average of 3.0 at the undergraduate level for applicants to the M.S. program, or 3.25 in the M.S. for Ph.D. applicants, based on a 4.0 scale.
Information for applicants with non-engineering degrees
For students who do not have an engineering degree, courses required before admission to our program include mathematics (22 quarter units):
- differential and integral calculus
- linear algebra
- differential equations
classical physics (12 qtr units):
- mechanics
- fluid mechanics
- thermodynamics
- wave phenomena
- optics
and general chemistry (10 qtr units).
Either before or after admission, the following background engineering courses must also be taken, in addition to the courses included in the graduate program:
- dynamics
- electronic circuits and systems
- fluid mechanics
- mechanics of materials
- thermodynamics
- a design course, and
- two upper division biological systems engineering courses of your choice
These engineering courses would consume an additional year, but may be taken after enrolling in the graduate program.
